This guide evaluates international best practice in bike-share, helps to bridge the divide between developing and developed countries’ experiences to provide guidance on planning and implementing a successful bike-share system regardless of the location, size, or density of your city.
Bike sharing is one of the most promising urban planning interventions to facilitate an all-necessary transition towards a more sustainable transport paradigm. Regardless of the fact that hundreds of schemes run in more than 50 countries worldwide, bike sharing is still moderately investigated by research. This paper reports on a primarily quantitative study of 558 responses that was set to frame attitudes reflecting public acceptance towards the rapidly expanding bike-sharing scheme in Gothenburg (Styr & Ställ), in an attempt to identify the ‘formula for success’.

High quality urban space where walking and cycling are convenient, direct, enjoyable and safe for people of all ages and abilities is part of what makes a successful, liveable city. Bristol has ambitious plans to increase the number of people riding bikes and walking as a solution to improving access and mobility into and around the city, to increase physical activity, and to give alternatives for people driving.
Bristol is a busy city and the urban hub of the West of England sub-region. Each and every day Bristol’s population swells as thousands of people travel into the city from the surrounding sub-region for work, education, and leisure.
A liveable city is a city that’s good for people; in terms of transport, this is a city free from congestion, as well as air and noise pollution; a city that’s accessible for people of all ages and abilities, and where people want to live, work, play and visit. Bristol has ambitions to be a city with inspiring and vibrant public spaces, enabling communities and high streets to come alive and thrive; where people walking, riding a bike and using public transport are far more common, sharing space with people driving slowly.
Bristol is a thriving city with a burgeoning population and employment. Between 2001 and 2011, the resident population grew by 10% to more than 428,0001 . At the same time the number of jobs has grown from 215,000 in 2001 to 236,000 in 2011 and both population and employment are forecast to continue to increase. Bristol already has among the highest rate of car ownership of the English Core Cities2 and per capita car ownership is also increasing.

In Spring 2014, employees of four faculties of the University of Ljubljana were invited to one-to-one meetings to discuss ways that their daily commute could be improved - a process known as personalised travel planning (PTP). Through the PTP, the University saw an increase in walking and cycling, and also raised the number of staff members considering a reduction in their car use.
On July 8th, Polis together with ECF, Eurocities, ETSC, T&E and CONEBI issued an open letter in order to support an amendment in the White Paper Midterm Review on an EU Roadmap for cycling.
The vote in the Transport committee of the European Parliament is expected next week, and the plenary vote will be in September.
Polis together with Eurocities sent an open letter to MEPs in order to vote for ambitious National Emission Ceiling Directive to tackle air pollution in urban areas.
In that perspective, both organization are calling for ambitious 2025 targets to limitate the emission ofParticulate Matters, Nitrogen Oxides and Ammonia. Furthermore, we also advocate for the implementation of Real Driving Emission Test procedure, which should reflect the reality in terms of pollutants emitted by cars. Europe should adopt an integrated approach in these issues.
In summer 2014 London’s Greenwich council delivered Phase 1 of their PTP-Cycle project. Some 5,000 households and 270 local residents were contacted within their homes or at local events and offered travel advise to help them switch their solo car journeys to more sustainable modes.
April 29th 2015, the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid participated at Busworld Academy sessions held as part of the Busworld India 2015 fair in the city of Mumbai. This event, co-organized in partnership with IRU (International Road Transport Union), featured EMT Madrid as a public company invited to share its experience in the use of hybrid and electric buses in the city of Madrid and to provide their views on the challenges and opportunities of bus transportation in large urban areas of India.
In summer 2014 Haringey Council, along with five other European cities, delivered Phase 1 of their PTP-Cycle project. Some 5 000 households and 500 local residents were contacted at home or at public events and offered Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) to help them switch solo car journeys to more sustainable modes.
The city of Riga is implementing personalised travel planning (PTP) aimed to affect a behaviour change away from private cars to sustainable modes such as cycling, walking and public transport. The target audience in phase 1 was households in two neighbourhoods and public events, but it was public events which proved much more successful as a means to engage people.
