Polis Global Platform

Polis Global Platform

Rapid urbanisation is a major global trend which is expected to further accelerate over the next decades. That is why Polis wants to link up European cities with their non-European counterparts, thus providing opportunities for a structural exchange of experience, expertise and best practice on shared global transport challenges, such as air pollution, congestion, road safety and accessibility.

The Polis Global Platform was established in 2016 with the aim to structure, pool, and support the increasing outreach activities of the network and its members on an international scale, including cooperation with relevant international organisations such as SLoCaT (Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport), the International Transport Forum (OECD), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe).

The Polis Global Platform also offers the possibility for non-European cities to become engaged in the network as associated members. Currently, Polis has two non-European members – São Paulo (Brazil) and Jerusalem (Israel).

In 2017, the priority will be on further developing communications around Polis Global and positioning the network in general and the platform in particular within an international context, by further enhancing cooperation with strategic international partners such as SLoCaT (of which Polis is a member), UNECE, the UN Inland Transport Committee, WHO and the Transport Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP), and ITF.

Cooperation and knowledge exchange with non-European cities is of course a core objective of the Polis Global Platform. Non-European speakers will also be invited to Polis Working Groups when relevant to the discussed topic – e.g. U.S. cities for automation, or Chinese cities for air quality. Polis will also seek to get involved as a body, as well as through its members, in international projects where the cooperation of European with non-European cities can be exploited.
