Polis members participate at 2012 European Mobility Week

From 16 to 22 September, during the European Mobility Week, Europe will see a large numer of local actions promoting sustainable transport. 11 Polis members have already planned local activities and registered them on the Mobility Week Website. Linked to the Week is the European Commission’s new Sustainable Urban Mobility campaign "Do the right Mix", which includes funding opportunities and an SUMP Award.

The European Mobility Week is an annual campaign on sustainable urban mobility, organised with the political and financial support of the Directorates-General for the Environment of the European Commission. The aim of the campaign, which runs from 16 to 22 September every year, is to encourage European local authorities to introduce and promote sustainable transport measures. Linked to the Mobility Week is DG Move's "Do the right Mix" campaign.

600 cities participate at the Mobility Week

More than 600 cities already participated and shared their activities online, among them are several Polis members: Barcelona, Bilbao, Budapest, DresdenGothenburgMadrid, NaplesRome, TallinnToulouse and Trondheim organise local events during the European Mobility Week and invite citizens to try out alternatives to the private car.

The Week culminates in the 'In Town Without My Car!' event on 22 September, which has been running since 2000, and sees participating towns and cities set aside one or several areas solely for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport for the entire day.

"Do the right Mix" and SUMP Award

The European Commission's Directorates-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) launched the Sustainable Urban Mobility Campaign "Do the right Mix" this year. Local authorities and non profit organisations can apply for funding up to EUR 7000 until 15 October 2012. Campaigning actions by local authorities and not for profit organisations on sustainable urban transport will be supported.

Additionally, on 3 September the call will open to apply for the related SUMP Award. It is the first European award scheme to recognise the efforts of cities and towns in the field of sustainable urban mobility planning. The focal theme will be stakeholder and citizen participation. A price of EUR 10,000 will be awarded to the winning city.
