Urban Freight Delivery and City Logistics

Commercial vehicle movements are necessary to deliver goods and services. However, these movements can have negative impacts in terms of emissions, noise and traffic.

Local authorities engage with logistic players and local businesses to come up with innovative strategies reconciling two potential conflicting elements: a freight distribution system satisfying the market demand, and a liveable, emission-free urban environment. This has led to a wide range of initiatives in the following areas: air quality & safety, clean & alternative fleet promotion, space management and consolidation, data and stakeholder engagement.

Our work on Urban Freight

Polis plays a central role at the European level for projects and activities related to urban freight. Thanks to the Polis Urban Freight Working Group, cities and regions can discuss the challenges they face, share good practices and improve collaboration with industry, prioritise topics and accelerate deployment of solutions.

Via the Urban Freight Working Group, Polis has developed several databases and tools to facilitate the exchange of experiences among its members. Polis members can have full access of the documents and tools produced by the Urban Freight Working Group below:

  • Cities & Regions Database: overview of (not only) Polis cities and regions’ information about urban freight plans, strategies and measures in place, areas of expertise, involvement in European projects, etc. This helps local authorities to learn from each other’s good practices at a glance. Available here (login required).
  • UF projects Database: overview of EU urban freight projects, opportunities for participation (including T&A costs reimbursement for workshops, site visits and meetings), and key reports and information. Available here (login required).
  • “Hot topics” list: At each working group meeting, Polis collects the topics on which members work or would like to obtain more information. This makes it possible to orient Polis' activities and prepare the next actions of the working group. Available here (login required).
